Description
Small orange-gold berries held inside a papery, lantern-like husk. Between its flavour and the presentation the husk allows, it is one of pastry work's best-loved decorative fruits.
Taste & Texture
A surprising cross between pineapple and tomato — sweet-tart, faintly tropical and clearly aromatic. It is at its best when the husk has dried to paper and the berry has turned a deep orange.
How to Enjoy
- Peel the husk back and dip the berry in chocolate to serve.
- Use as a garnish on cakes, cheesecakes and dessert plates.
- Add to green salads and cheeseboards.
- Simmer with sugar into jam or a sauce.
Storage
With the husk left on it keeps an unusually long 2–3 weeks refrigerated. Wash only just before eating — moisture shortens shelf life.
Nutrition
Contains vitamin C, beta-carotene and fibre, and is low in calories.
